Tacloban, Philippines: One of the strongest typhoons ever to make landfall devastated the central Philippines, killing more than a thousand people in one city alone and more in another province, the Red Cross said on Saturday, as reports of high casualties began to emerge. Leyte island suffered heavily, with huge waves sweeping away coastal villages and destroying about 70 to 80 percent of structures in its path.
