10 Family Friendly Breeds of Dog

Beagle
The Beagle is a breed of small to medium-sized dog. A member of the Hound Group, it is similar in appearance to the Foxhound, but smaller, with shorter legs and longer, softer ears. The Beagle has an even temper and gentle disposition. Described in several breed standards as "merry", they are amiable and typically neither aggressive nor timid, although this depends on the individual. The Beagle generally seems calmer once mentally matured, exhibiting naughty, puppy-like behaviour up until 2-4 years of age. They enjoy company, and although they may initially be standoffish with strangers, they are easily won over.

Rough Collie
The Rough Collie (also known as the 'Long-Haired Collie') is a long coated breed of medium to large size dog that in its original form was a type of collie used and bred for herding in Scotland. Rough collies should show no nervousness or aggression, and are generally good with children and other animals. However, they must be well socialised to prevent shyness. They are medium to large sized dogs, but can be well suited to live in small apartments because of their calm disposition.

Basset Hound
The Basset Hound is a short-legged breed of dog of the hound family. One of six recognized Basset Breeds in France, they are scent hounds, originally bred for the purpose of hunting rabbits and hare. The Basset Hound is a friendly dog, to people and other pets, and makes an excellent companion for children. Because Bassets are scent hounds, they should always be on a leash when out on walks. Although they are thought of as lazy, they have a tendency to run after prey, so a leash is very important for their safety. Even though Bassets sleep a lot, walks are still necessary.

Dachshund
The dachshund is a short-legged, long-bodied dog breed belonging to the hound family. Dachshunds are playful, but can be stubborn, and are known for their propensity for chasing small animals, birds, and tennis balls with great determination and ferocity. Many dachshunds are stubborn, making them a challenge to train. They are statistically more aggressive to both strangers and other dogs. They are also markedly aggressive towards their owners.

Lovable Mutt
A mutt is a mixed-breed dog which are not purebred. They may literal mixes of two or more breeds, such as crossbreeds, but the term is also commonly used for dogs that may have no purebred ancestors or actually been bred at all. While mutts aren't technically a breed, you should consider the possibility of rescuing a puppy or an abandoned older dog when choosing a family pet.

Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever is one of several kinds of retriever, a type of gun dog. A breed characteristic is webbed paws for swimming, useful for the breed's original purpose of retrieving fishing nets. The Labrador is the most popular breed of dog. Typically, Labradors are athletic and love to swim, play catch and retrieve games, are good with young children, elderly, and for protection.

Pug
The pug is a toy dog with a wrinkly, short-muzzled face, and curled tail. The breed has a fine, glossy coat that comes in a variety of colors, and a compact square body with well-developed muscle. Strong willed but rarely aggressive, the pug is suitable for families with children. The majority of the breed is very fond of children and sturdy enough to properly play with them. They can be quiet and docile but also vivacious and teasing depending on their owner's mood.

Golden Retriever
The Golden Retriever is a medium-sized breed of dog. They were historically developed as gundogs to retrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks and upland game birds during hunting and shooting parties. They were named retriever because of their ability to retrieve game undamaged. The Golden Retriever is a hallmark of the breed and is described in the standard as "kindly, friendly and confident". They are great family pets and get along great with children. They are not "one man dogs" and are generally equally amiable with both strangers and those familiar to them. Their trusting, gentle disposition makes them a poor guard dog.

Papillon
The Papillon (from the French word for butterfly), also called the Continental Toy Spaniel, is a breed of dog of the Spaniel type. One of the oldest of the toyspaniels, it derives its name from its characteristic butterfly-like look of the long and fringed hair on the ears. The proper temperament of a papillon is a happy, friendly, adventurous dog. They should not be shy or aggressive.

Newfoundland
The Newfoundland is a giant breed of dog. Newfoundlands can be black, brown, gray, or black and white (Landseer). They were originally bred and used as a working dog for fishermen in the Dominion of Newfoundland, now part of Canada. They are known for their giant size, tremendous strength, calm dispositions, and loyalty. Newfoundland dogs excel at water rescue/lifesaving because of their muscular build, thick doublecoat, webbed feet, and innate swimming abilities. Legendary for its calm and docile nature and its strength. They are incredibly loyal and make incredible working dogs. It is for this reason that this breed is known as "the gentle giant" or the nanny dog. International kennel clubs generally describe the breed as having a sweet temper.
