“Rooted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith.”
World Youth Day is a youth oriented Roman Catholic Church event. While the event itself celebrates the Catholic faith, invitation to attend is non-denominational. World Youth Day is not associated with International Youth Day or any of the international observance days. World Youth Day (or in short 'WYD') was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1986. It is a time for youth aged 18-35 to celebrate their pride in being Catholic Christians.
Every three years the Pope convenes an international gathering of young people from around the world to gather in one place for a week of prayer, worship, catechesis, bridge building and fellowship (and fun, too). World Youth Day is not an opportunity to “explore abroad,” or “enjoy vacation time” (though opportunities are usually scheduled for a couple days ahead, or afterwards). World Youth Day is a pilgrimage.
The theme of WYD 2011 is “Rooted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith.” It is based upon Colossians 2:7. All of the catechesis, prayer and events will be centered upon this theme.
Specifically, there have been ten international WYDs in different locations throughout the world. Madrid 2011, therefore, will be the eleventh international WYD to be held since John Paul II instituted the days.
The highlights of World Youth Day are the prayer vigil and the closing Mass which Pope Benedict will preside at. Both of these will take place atCuatro Vientos Airport ,Madridon August 20 and 21. At the closing Mass Pope Benedict will announce the venue for the next international World Youth Day.
