The most powerful earthquake to hit Japan in at least 100 years, The epicenter was offshore 373 kilometers (231 miles) away from Tokyo. The quake, which struck at 2:46 pm March 11, 2011 sparked fires in at least 80 locations, Japan's Kyodo News Service reported. An  8.9-magnitude quake triggers huge waves, at least 93 dead according to first official death toll from police; expected to rise to a thousands.
