1.) JANUARY: HAITI
Magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the poverty-stricken Caribbean nation of Haiti, damaging buildings and power lines, the most powerful to hit Haiti in a century. The death toll is estimated at over 250,000.



2.) FEBRUARY: CHILE
Magnitude 8.8 earthquake hits Concepcion, Chile's second-largest metropolitan area, about 70 miles from the quake center. More than 1.5 million people have displaced and 700 estimated dead by the quake.



3.) MARCH: UGANDA
People searching for the bodies after a mudslide in Bududa, 228 miles east of the Ugandan capital, Kampala. More than 300 people died.



4.) APRIL: CHINA
Magnitude 7.1 quake hits Yushu county in north-west province of Qinghai province,China that kills over 2,000 people and 10,000 were injured.



5.) APRIL: ICELAND
Dormant for 200 years, icelandic volcano near Eyjafjallajoekull glacier has erupted, spewing ash into the air over the north atlantic shutting down airports in Europe for about three weeks.



6.) MAY: INDIA
Air India airliner crashed and burst into flames when it overshoots the runway in the city of Mangalore, killing 158 people and 8 injured. The deadliest plane crash of the year.



7.) JUNE: U.K.
A taxi driver has gone on a shooting spree across a rural area of northwestern English town of Whitehaven, England, killing 12 people and wounding 25 others before turning the gun on himself. 



8.) AUGUST: PAKISTAN
The massive floods in Pakistan have spread to the southern province of Sindh, where hundreds of thousands of people are on the move after evacuating their inundated villages, killing at least 1,760 and leaving 21 million homeless. 



9.) OCTOBER: CHILE
Chile's trapped miners who have been trapped underground for almost two-month are finally rescued, The 33 miners climbed into a specially designed steel capsule and took a 15-minute journey through 2,050 feet of rock to the surface.



10.) OCTOBER: IRAQ
Al-Qaeda armed men stormed into a Christian church in central Baghdad, detonating three bombs before exchanging fire with security forces and possibly taking hostages in the church, killing 37 worshippers and two priests, wounding 60 others.
